School Notebook

The season of Lent

“At the end of this month we will begin the season of Lent,” writes Father Alex Zenthoefer, chaplain at Mater Dei and Memorial high schools, both in Evansville.

He encouraged parents “during this season to be attentive to your relationship with your students and to continue to communicate with them on a regular basis about their relationship with God.”

Nominees

Four teachers at Good Shepherd School, Evansville, have been nominated for the outstanding educator award sponsored by the University of Evansville and the Evansville Courier and Press Newspaper. They are Debbie Achilles, Patti Woolen, Vallee Gries and Patti Herrin.

Happy Birthday!

Melba Wilderman, principal at St. Joseph School, Vander-burgh County, celebrates her birthday Feb. 25.

Encyclopedia Britannica Online

Resurrection School, Evansville, has recently purchased the Encyclopedia Britannica books and online versions for student and teacher use. They may access the online version of the encyclopedia at home.

“This valuable resource will be lots of help with research and homework,” said Angie Johnson, principal.

Music competition

Several students at Memorial High School, Evansville, received gold and silver ratings at the recent ISSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival, according to Andrea Savickis, choir director.

The following soloists received gold ratings: Maria An-derson, Annie Baumer, Megh-an Gallagher, Megan Hostetler, Monica Meisling and Aman-da Slott.

The following soloists received silver ratings: Kellie Ackerman, Cindy Alfaro, Ellen Marburger and Rachel Massey.

The concert choir also earned a gold rating. Members include Cindy Alfaro, Annie Baumer, Mari Cornett, Susan Doss, Emily Durchholz, Sarah Esche, Katie Finn, Danielle Gribbins, Erin Hails, Nadine Hawa, Rachel Massey, Monica Meisling, Leslie Powell, Amanda Slott, Lauren Ward and Erin Wolf-ord.

PTG

Karen Lilly is president of the PTG at Holy Family School, Jasper. Shari Krempp is vice-president, Angela Rennie is treasurer, and Rose Hoffman is secretary.

Dana Krodel, Michelle Lue-ken, Kathy Gutgsell and Karen Grewe are at-large members.

Geography Bee

Mark Lasher is the winner of the geography bee at St. Bernard School, Rockport. Kara Varble is runner-up.

Ice storm

First graders at Holy Family School, Jasper, share what they did during the recent ice storm:

  • Friends came over to our house because they didn’t have electricity;
  • We cooked our neighbors’ lunch when they didn’t have electricity;
  • Neighbors let us come to their house to stay warm;
  • We prayed for all the people to stay safe.
