Memorial student seeking state student council seat
On Thursday, April 23, eleven students and Sandy Morris, advisor of Memorial High School will attend this year’s Representative Assembly of the Indiana Association of Student Council (IASC). The annual event is held at the Horizon Center in Muncie, Ind. More than 1,000 high school students from all over Indiana are expected to attend. This year’s conference pays tribute to the IASC’s theme for 2008-09: Up, Up and Away with Leadership.
This year is very special for Memorial, Morris said. Ryan Schultheis, from the class of 2011 is running for District 11 Representative on the High School Executive Committee. “We are very proud of Ryan!”
While at the conference, students will have the opportunity to participate in the democratic process and elect the student candidate who will represent their geographic district on the IASC high school division executive committee. Additionally the delegates from each school will vote for the IASC president for the 2009-2010 school year. The adult representatives to the high school executive committee will be chosen, and the host school for the 2009 IASC state convention will be announced.
In addition to being part of the election process, student delegates will engage in many other activities throughout the day, including service activities and leadership training as well as networking with other students from across Indiana.
Ed Gerety, a nationally recognized motivational speaker, will address the group; a representative from Riley Children’s Hospital will make a presentation, and the Kathy Green Outstand-ing Service Awards will be bestowed on worthy students from around the state. The students anticipate an enriching and invigorating experience at the conference.
