‘Picnic with the Bishop’
The fourth annual “Picnic with the Bishop” will be held Wednesday, June 3, at St. John the Evangelist Church in Daylight.
The picnic is an occasion for young people to spend time with Bishop Gerald A. Gettelfinger and others who will talk about their experiences within their vocation.
The event begins at 5 p.m. Bishop Gettelfinger will celebrate Mass at 5:30 p.m. followed by presentations, food and fun.
Anyone who will be a high school junior or older in the fall of 2009 is welcome to attend. Interested persons should contact their parish to make a reservation by May 29.

Going to Kansas City
Plans are being made for young people from the diocese to attend this year’s National Catholic Youth Conference in Kansas City, Mo., according to Steve Dabrowski, diocesan director of youth and young adult ministry.
“We plan to leave from two locations (Jasper and Evansville) on Thursday morning, Nov. 19, and we will return the afternoon/early evening of Sunday, Nov. 22,” he said
The cost of the trip is $450, which includes transportation to and from Kansas City and all transfers during the weekend, hotel accommodations, daily breakfast, commemorative trip T-shirt and one group meal.
Grant helps early breast cancer detection
St. Mary’s Medical Center has announced that its project entitled “Sharing the Vision: Early Detection of Breast Cancer” recently received a grant in the amount of $94,491.35 from the Greater Evansville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
“This is the eighth year that the St. Mary’s Foundation has had the privilege of providing services through ‘Sharing the Vision: Early Detection of Breast Cancer,’“ says Holly Neal, a registered nurse and manager of the St. Mary’s Breast Center.
“Sharing the Vision” is coordinated out of St. Mary’s Hope Resource Center by the Health Services Liaison, in collaboration with the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP), St. Mary’s Breast Center, St. Mary’s Medical Center, along with area hospitals, community centers, housing authorities, libraries, clinics, churches, Ivy Tech State College, ECHO and Goodwill Industries.
Fundraiser in Fulda
A fundraiser will be held at St. Boniface parish hall in Fulda, Ind., on Saturday, April 18, with fried chicken dinners available at 5:30 p.m. CDT. Gaming events will follow at 6 p.m.
Proceeds will be used for repairs of parish buildings.

‘Equipping with Love’ conference May 16
Catholic clergy and lay leaders are invited to an “Equipping With Love” conference to be held at the Abundant Life Church in New-burgh, Saturday, May 16, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Presentations are planned on suicide prevention, pornographic strongholds, homosexuality and divorce.
The session on suicide prevention will in-clude information from the QPR Institute on how to Question, Persuade and Refer someone.
Willy Schuette, a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Newburgh, along with Joe Hardesty, youth minister at the parish, will make the pornography presentation, including “Sexting.”
Jeff Buchanan, church network director for Exodus International, will be the speaker on same sex attraction and homosexuality.
Community Marriage Builders will give the presentation on divorce, with tools to educate, enrich and equip pre-married couples, married couples and struggling married couples.
Emily Snipes and Cecelia Reising from Catholic Charities will staff a display table at the conference.

Workshop on ‘Essential Small Church’
The Rev. Dr. David Ray will present a workshop entitled “The Essential Small Church” at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 3600 Oak Hill Road in Evansville, on Thursday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. CDT.
Ray will introduce the assessment tools, “30 Common Characteristics of the Smaller Church” and the “Morale Inventory.”
His presentation is sponsored by the Center for Congregations, an organization established to assist Indiana congregations in finding and using the best resources available.
The cost for the workshop is $30 per person, or $25 per person for teams of three or more.
