People We Care About
Following is a feature in the Message, designed to help draw together the People of God in southwestern Indiana. Readers are invited to submit information about people who may benefit by some extra prayers and attention.
Daughter of Charity Sister Adelaide Curtis, 101, died at Seton Residence on June 10.
She was born in New Iberia, La., in 1908; she was one of four children born to George and Ca-mille (Mestayer) Curtis. She entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis, Mo., on October 26, 1924.
The majority of Sister’s ministry was spent serving as a teacher and housemother. Her first mission as a teacher was at Holy Trinity School in Dallas, Texas, from 1925 until 1936, when she began teaching at St. Vincent School in Perryville, Mo. In 1943, Sister Adelaide went to St. Rose’s Home in Milwaukee, Wis., where she was a housemother and teacher. During this time, she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from DePaul University, Chicago.
In 1955, Sister Adelaide was sent to Maryvale, an orphanage in Los Angeles, Calif., to serve as a caseworker. From 1958 through 1975, she was a housemother for St. Vincent Group Home, Milwaukee; Mount St. Joseph, San Francisco; St. Mary’s Home, Mobile, and St. Rose Home, Milwaukee, where she supervised lay housemothers. From 1975 to 1978, Sister Adelaide worked with senior adults in an Activities Program at Allen Memorial Home in Mobile, until she returned to St. Mary’s Home in Mobile to assist in Child Care Activities.
After completing instruction in Pastoral Care in 1984, Sister began serving as patient representative at St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw, Mich., until August 1998, when she came to Seton Residence to be-come part of the Ministry of Prayer.
A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated June 13 in Seton Residence Chapel.
