Worth Mentioning

Year of the Priests

In a June 19 e-mail, Bishop Gerald A. Gettelfinger writes, “This morning I offered Mass with my brother bishops here in San Antonio on this the Feast of the Sacred Heart.

“I offered the Mass especially for you, my brothers, as we begin today the Year of the Priests.

“May Jesus, our Eternal High Priest, abide with us and sustain us. May our devotion to His Sacred Heart strengthen our love for each other and for all whose lives we touch day in and day out.

“As we face daily struggles in our ministry in a world that is becoming less and less welcoming of Jesus’ Gospel and of us who proclaim it, may we find solace in placing our suffering of the Cross! May His Divine love for us buoy us up and the Holy Spirit guide us day by day.

“In closing know that you will be especially present to me at our Holy Hour here in San Antonio as we conclude our meeting!

“With fraternal love and abiding prayer,”

+Bishop Gerald

Accreditation received

CARF International has announced that the following programs have been added to St. Mary’s Rehabilitation Institute’s existing accreditation:

  • Inpatient Rehabilitation Programs —Hospital: Brain Injury Program (Adults)
  • Inpatient Rehabilitation Programs — Hospital: Brain In-jury Program (Children and Adolescents).

“This significant achievement is a further indication of our organization’s dedication and commitment to improving the quality of the lives of the brain injured persons we serve,” says Frank Conkling, director of St. Mary’s Rehabilitation Institute. “We are committed to providing a secure, pleasant and comfortable environment where patients receive advanced brain injury rehabilitation. We focus on individualized care, cost effective and evidence based treatment, patient and family satisfaction and outcomes promoting independence and in-creased quality of life.”

St. Mary’s Rehabilitation Institute received a Three-Year CARF Accreditation in January of 2008 for its Inpatient Re-habilitation Program — Hospital (Adults) and Inpatient Re-habilitation Programs — Hospital (Children and Adolescents).

This accreditation, which extends through August 2010, represents the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization and shows the organization’s substantial conformance to the CARF standards, according to Conkling. An organization receiving a Three-Year Accreditation has put itself through a rigorous peer review process and has demonstrated to a team of surveyors, during an on-site visit, that its programs and services are of the highest quality, measurable and accountable.

St. Mary’s Rehabilitation Institute is located on St. Mary’s main campus at 3700 Washington Avenue in Evansville. The facility offers comprehensive inpatient and brain injury rehabilitation services for pediatric, adolescent and adult patients.

CARF is an independent, non-profit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process that centers on enhancing the lives of the persons served. Founded in 1966 as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, and now known as CARF, the accrediting body establishes consumer-focused standards to help organizations measure and improve the quality of their programs and services.
