Around the Diocese

Sunday envelopes

In a recent parish newsletter at St. Raphael Church, Dubois, and St. Peter Celestine Church, Celestine, Father Ron Kreilein writes, “We discussed whether or not to do away with the Sunday envelopes,” due to the parish using direct deposit.

“I believe we should continue using them because there will be a box marked ‘direct deposit’ on them. This will help our children to learn to tithe each Sunday, even though the envelopes will be empty.

“If we do away with the envelopes, the children will probably never learn about tithing because they don’t see mom and dad putting anything into the collection basket. It is really important that parents teach their children about the importance of tithing regularly. This is part of our Catholic tradition.

“A priest once told me that if each parish family would tithe just five percent every week, we would never need fundraisers like bingo, shooting matches or socials in our diocese.”
