Memorial celebrates 85th

Memorial High School in Evansville will celebrate its eighty-fifth anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 15, according to Gwen Godsey, principal. Members of the Friends and Alumni Association, administration and faculty are participating in the milestone event and have issued an open invitation.

The evening event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and include dinner, a silent auction and live music.

The majority of the activity will take place on the east parking lot of the school. Attendees must be 21 years of age to enter.

Tickets should be purchased in advance and are available now at the Development and Alumni offices.

Admission is $20 a person or a table of eight can be purchased for $120.

The proceeds raised from the eighty-fifth anniversary celebration will be set aside to assist in funding a new student parking lot scheduled to be under construction in the next two years.

Diocesan Choir to sing for diaconal ordination

Jeremy Korba, director of the Diocesan Choir has issued an open invitation to all singers and instrumentalists to join the choir, now preparing for the ordination of 12 men to the permanent diaconate at St. Benedict Cathedral in Evansville on Saturday, Aug. 15.

“It is a rewarding and prayerful experience for musicians of ALL skill levels!” Korba said.

One Bread, One Cup participants raise fund for charity

Participants in the “One Bread, One Cup” summer liturgical leadership conferences at St. Meinrad School of Theology recently raised $2,132 for Catholic-based charities.

 The funds were raised as part of a project for one of the conference liturgical formation sessions, “Service in the Life of the Body of Christ.” During the June 15-19 conference, participants raised $289.36 for Catholic Relief Services.

 The June 26-30 conference participants raised $501.44 for the Tell City Catholic Chari-ties. Participants in the last conference, held July 6-10, raised $1,342 to help build a classroom for first- and second-grade students in Jimma, Ethiopia.

The “One Bread, One Cup” conferences are offered each summer at St. Meinrad for high school youth and diocesan directors and campus and youth ministers. The conferences focus on teaching youth about their Catholic faith and the liturgy, with a theme of “Word — Sacrament — Mission.”

The conferences are led by an experienced staff of Benedictine monks and catechists from throughout United States and Mexico. This summer, 327 high school youth and 125 adults participated in the conferences, which were staffed, in part, by 23 college interns.

Storyteller theologian examines church rituals

A presentation entitled, “Sacraments, Liturgy, and Ritual Rites of Justice,” will be presented by Megan McKenna, a theologian and storyteller, in Evansville and Ferdinand.

“Megan McKenna combines the study of scripture and church teachings with storytelling as she walks us through the Sacraments,” said Benedictine Sister Geraldine Hedinger, diocesan director for adult formation. “She leads us, through storytelling, to look closely at our prized possessions: the rituals of our church.”

The presentations will be at the Catholic Center in Evansville on Friday, Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CDT, and at St. Gertrude Hall, Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, on Satuday, Aug. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. EDT.

The fee of $10 per person includes the noon meal and hospitality. Register by Friday, July 31.

Cancer Center accredited

The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons has granted a three-year Accreditation with Commendation to the Lange-Fuhs Cancer Center at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper.
