Around the Diocese
10 year anniversary
El Centro Hispano, now called the Guadalupe Center, opened in September of 1999 in Father Gene Heerdink’s house. In October of 2000, the center moved to Huntingburg to the building that was previously St. Mary’s School.
The name was changed in 2001 to reflect the center’s Catholic identity under the patronage of Our Lady of Guadalupe who appeared to St. Juan Diego in Mexico. “Our Lady spoke to him in his native language, Nahuatl, and used symbols of his culture to help him understand her message to him. Un-der her patronage, the center seeks to serve immigrants res-pecting their native customs and culture,” said Benedictine Sister Karen Durliat, director.
In October 2005, the Guadalupe Center moved to its current location in Huntingburg.

Spirituality Program
“In an effort to continually enhance our students faith formation, several changes have been made to our spirituality program,” said Timothy Dickel, principal at Mater Dei High School, Evansville.
“Throughout the school year, students will attend Masses with their class every quarter to provide a more intimate spir-itual experience.
“Freshmen and sophomores will have faith formation days where they will spend time together focusing on various aspects of spirituality each se-mester. This new format along with the class Masses will create more continuity for our students than a one day retreat.
“Mass is offered by Father Alex Zenthoefer on Tuesday and Wednesday before school in the chapel every week, and parents are welcome to attend. Deacon John McMullen leads Liturgy of the Hours before school on Thursdays. The chap-el is open on Mondays and Fri-days before school for private prayer.”
