Schola being formed for diocese, plans being made for pilgrimage to Rome
Auditions for schola this weekend
Rorate Caeli, a new audition-only schola of the Catholic Diocese of Evansville, is seeking singers for its inaugural season.
This advanced ensemble is open to singers of all ages, according to Jeremy Korba, director of the diocesan choir.
“We are looking for 18 to 24 singers with advanced singing ability and a passion for sacred choral music,” Korba said. “We will focus on advanced sacred music from throughout the world. The ability to read music is preferred, but not required.”
The Schola will appear in concert and performance as part of the 2010 Pilgrimage to Rome with the Diocese of Evansville. Participation in the Rome trip is not a requirement to join this group.
Auditions are scheduled on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 25, 26 and 27, at St. Benedict Cathedral.
Interested persons must schedule a time to audition. Contact Korba at (812) 589-3886 or e-mail jkorba@evansville-diocese.org.
The 10-minute audition process will consist of singing a prepared piece of music of the singer’s choice to show range and ability, a short passage to sightread, and vocal testing for range and ability to control vocal production.
Pilgrimage to Italy in September 2010
A 10-day pilgrimage to Rome with Bishop Gerald A. Gettelfinger is open to anyone, according to Jeremy Korba. Choir members, their families and friends should find the plans particularly pleasing.
The Diocesan Choir and Schola will be singing a Formal Concert for the City of Rome, singing at Mass at the Basilica of St. Francis, singing for the pope and thousands of pilgrims at the Vatican General Audience, and singing at Mass at the Vatican, in St. Peter’s Basilica, at the Altar of the Chair.
For everyone, singers and non-singers alike, the pilgrimage, Sept. 21-29, 2010, will feature Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, a General Audience with Pope Benedict and Papal Blessing, tours of Rome and the Vatican, Mass at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice and Mass at the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi.
Sightseeing in Rome and at the Vatican will include St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Tomb of St. Peter, the Church of St. Peter in Chains, the Roman Forum and the Coli-seum.
The pilgrimage will also go to the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua and to sites in Venice and Florence.
The trip is open to everyone, at $3,950.00 per person, which includes airfare from Cincinnati, hotel accomodations, several meals, transportation in Italy and entry fees for events and tour destinations.
