Lecture in Homiletics

St. Meinrad School of Theology will present the 19th annual John S. and Virginia Marten Lecture in Homiletics on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. CDT.

In his talk, “Lighting a Fire: Preaching as Teaching and Proclamation,” the Rev. Dr. Paul Scott Wilson will explain how preachers can become bogged down in teaching the biblical text or how parishioners should live their lives. His talk will focus on how a larger purpose of preaching can easily be overlooked: to proclaim the gospel.

He will also conduct a workshop on Wednesday, October 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Church Leadership Center. Both the lecture and the workshop are free and open to the public.

Wilson is professor of homiletics at Emmanuel College in the University of Toronto and the Toronto School of Theology, where he has taught for 27 years. He is an ordained minister of the United Church of Canada and has served several churches.

The lecture-workshop series is made possible by an endowment established by the John S. Marten family of Indianapolis.
