Churches to continue H1N1 precautions

By PAUL R. LEINGANG (Message editor)

The sign of peace should be omitted and communion should not be taken from the chalice, at least until Dec. 1, in the Diocese of Evansville. That is a summary of a recent H1N1 update sent to parishes from Matt Miller, diocesan director of worship, Oct. 28.

“There are still certainly many unknowns about the H1N1 flu,” Miller said. “Grave concerns remain about spreading further this strain of flu. The local health department acknowledges the continued increase of confirmed cases in our area.”

Miller said the situation would be revised again on or before Dec. 1, “and you will be advised as how to proceed.”

Miller said that, at this time, “this still does not appear to limit or stop gathering in groups for Mass or other functions.”

He encouraged parish leaders to “Take special note that the most vulnerable at this moment seem to be the very young, children, youth and young adults.”

Common sense and courtesy

Along with the message was a list of “best actions” to take based on common sense and courtesy.

• Stay home if you are sick. This includes the workplace, schools, churches, meetings and any social activities. If there are sick in your midst, plead with them to go home for the good of the rest.

Remember the three Cs of Clean, Cover and Contain.

• Clean your hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitizers.

• Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Use tissues and dispose of them properly.

• Contain germs: avoid touching your mouth, eyes or nose and stay home when you are sick.

Please continue to remember all of the sick in prayer.

Thank you for your attention, concern, and patience in these matters. Simon and Jude, pray for us!
