Worth Mentioning

Collection for Catholic Campaign for Human Development

For nearly 40 years, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development has worked to em-power low-income families and individuals.

CCHD has helped the Evansville area efforts of Congregations Acting for Justice and Em-powerment with grants to help operate.

CCHD has also given a technical assistance grant to the Glenwood Neighborhood in Evansville, so that leaders of the association could attend a training session in 2008. Another grant has been requested, to help leaders receive training in recruiting new members and working with other organizations.

The mission of CCHD in 2009 is “to uplift and embolden all who are on layoff or one medical scare away from the poverty line — and all who are already there.”

Advent Vespers at the Cathedral

The general public is invited to take some time during Advent to prepare for the celebration of Christmas with the evening prayer of the Church.

Come to St. Benedict Cathedral every Sunday in Advent (Nov. 29, and Dec. 6, 13 and 20) at 5:30 p.m. for the celebration of Vespers.

Evening Prayer consists of the singing of psalms and canticles, the reading of Scripture, homily and intercessions.

“This is a great opportunity for families, religious education groups, and anyone looking to give thanks to God this Advent season,” said Matt Miller, diocesan director of the Office of Worship.

Christmas crèches on display at St. Meinrad

An exhibit of Christmas crèches from around the world will be on display in the St. Meinrad Archabbey Library from Dec. 4 through Jan. 12.

The display features crèches from the mon-astery collection, as well as from the Catherine A. Smith Nativity Collection, which was do-nated to St. Meinrad in 2002 in memory of Charles Patrick “Pat” Smith.

Catherine Smith began collecting nativity sets in 1971, purchasing many during her extensive travels throughout the world.

She donated the collection to St. Meinrad in memory of her brother, who studied for the priesthood at St. Meinrad and later served as a priest in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

The crèches selected for display represent a variety of styles and media, including porcelain, wood, glazed tile, glass, cloth, stone, metals and ceramic.

The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Advent inspiration for couples, families

Susan Vogt offers Marriage Moments and Parenting Pointers throughout the year.

A sample Marriage Moment follows, for Dec. 7: Advent is a time of holy waiting. Practice waiting on your spouse today. Calmly wait for your spouse to arrive (instead of stewing if he or she is late). Or “wait on” your spouse in the sense of doing a favor for him or her.

A sample Parenting Pointer follows, for Dec. 4: Advent is the season of waiting. Don’t hurry Christmas. Help your children practice patience this week. Use tools such as the Ad-vent wreath or an Advent calendar to mark the time. Help your children wait by not celebrating before Dec. 25 — at least at home. (We can’t control the rest of the world.) Decorate slowly and in stages. Consider waiting to do the tree.
