Worth Mentioning

Flu protection practices continue

“Grave concerns” still remain about spreading further the H1N1 flu, especially in this highly social holiday season, according to Matt Miller, diocesan director of the Office of Worship. He said the local health department has acknowledged the continued increase of confirmed cases and deaths in our area.

According to a Nov. 30 statement from the Office of Worship, Bishop Gerald A. Gettelfinger “strongly urges” that the Sign of Peace be omitted and Communion not be offered from the chalice.

The situation will be revisited again on or before Jan. 8, Miller said.

John Angotti at Mass and in concert

John Angotti will be in concert at St. John the Baptist Church in Newburgh on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m. He will also be leading music at the parish liturgies, Saturday, Dec. 5 at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 8:45 a.m., 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Advent Vespers at the Cathedral

The general public is invited to take some time this Advent to prepare for the celebration of Christmas with the evening prayer of the Church, on the Sundays of Advent at 5:30 p.m., at St. Benedict Cathedral in Evansville.

Evening Prayer consists of the singing of psalms and canticles, the reading of Scripture, homily and intercessions. This is a great opportunity for families, religious education groups and anyone looking to give thanks to God this Advent season.

Father Chris Forler will preside Dec. 6; Father John Silva, Dec. 13; and Bishop Gerald A. Gettelfinger, Dec. 20.

Comfort blankets needed at Jasper Memorial

In order to relieve some of the stress and anxiety that children normally experience when hospitalized, Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper is providing a child-size blanket, known as a comfort blanket, to each pediatric inpatient.

The supply of comfort blankets is running low, and new blankets would be much appreciated.

Memorial Hospital provides medical care for more than 320 patients ranging in age from newborn to 18 in the Pediatric Unit each year.  The goal is to provide each hospitalized child with a new blanket or afghan that may be taken home.

Colorful blankets such as quilts, comforters, fleece blankets, or knitted afghans that are washable may be donated to this project. Blankets must be of good quality in kid-friendly colors, of appropriate size, and free of any hazardous materials and allergens such as cigarette smoke. New, handmade blankets are preferred, although purchased blankets will be accepted.

For information, contact Debbie Miller at (812) 634-0813.
