Around the Diocese

Advent at Flaget

In a letter to parents at Flaget Elementary School in Vincennes, Anne Pratt, principal, writers, “Dear Parents,

“Advent comes from the Latin word adventus meaning ‘coming.’ The season of Advent has been set aside as a time of preparation for Christmas since at least the last half of the sixth century.

“Advent is time for self-examination and asking for forgiveness as the church is preparing for Christ’s Second Coming even as it prepares for Christmas. At Flaget, we hope to keep the spirit of Christmas alive through our observation of Advent.  We will be having special Advent ceremonies each Mon-day, and we will be reading a scripture verse each morning and placing  ornaments on our school Jesse tree each day to symbolize God’s promises to us.

“Our hope is that you will join us in the celebration of this blessed season at home by making your own Advent wreath and taking time each day to light the candles and think about the importance of having Jesus in our lives.”
