Advent Vespers at the Cathedral
Advent Vespers — the Evening Prayer of the Church — is being celebrated at St. Benedict Cathedral in Evansville on the Sundays of Advent, at 5:30 p.m. CST.
Father John Silva will preside on Sunday, Dec. 13.
Bishop Gerald A. Gettelfinger will preside on Sunday, Dec. 20.
Evening Prayer consists of the singing of psalms and canticles, the reading of Scripture, homily and intercessions. This is a great opportunity for families, religious education groups and anyone looking to give thanks to God this Advent season.
At Monastery Immaculate Conception
Christmas Eve services are scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 24, in the monastery church. Prelude music of Christmas carols will begin at 9:30 p.m. EST followed by Mass at 10 p.m. Refreshments will be served in the monastery dining room immediately after Mass.
WAXL radio station (103.3 FM) will broadcast the Christmas Eve services live beginning at 10 p.m.
Christmas morning Mass, Dec. 25, will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. EST.
The Christmas lights display on “Grotto Hill” on the monastery grounds will be lit every evening through Jan. 6.
The Celebration Singers will present a Christmas concert in the monastery church at 2:30 p.m. on January 3. A free-will offering may be made.

At St. Mary-of-the-Woods
Advent Vespers are scheduled Sundays in St. Joseph Chapel in Owens Hall at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Service time is 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.
All prayer services are open to the public and to people of all faith traditions.
At St. Meinrad Archabbey
The public is welcome to join the Bene-dictine monks of St. Meinrad Archabbey as they celebrate Christmas in the Archabbey Church.
Vigils begin at 7 p.m. and Mass will be celebrated at midnight on Thursday, Dec. 24. The Mass of Christmas Day will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 25. All times are Central Time.
Crèches on display
An exhibit of Christmas crèches from around the world will be on display in the St. Meinrad Archabbey Library through Jan. 12.
The display features crèches from the mon-astery collection, as well as from the Cath-erine A. Smith Nativity Collection, which was donated to Saint Meinrad in 2002 in memory of Charles Patrick (“Pat”) Smith.
The exhibit is free, open to the public.
Holy Card exhibit
The Archabbey Library Gallery is presenting an exhibit of holy cards from the library’s collection, titled “Holy Cards: Popular Devotional Keepsakes in Roman Catholic Culture, 1860-1920.”
Holy cards exhibited represent a range of popular devotions, including the Sacred Heart, Jesus, the Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady, the Holy Family, saints and angels. The exhibit will run through Feb. 28.
St. Mother Theodore on Walk of Fame
St. Mother Theodore Guerin, foundress of the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, is among the first group of individuals chosen for the new Local Legends Walk of Fame in Terre Haute.
Also among the first inductees are Theodore Dreiser, known as the father of the American novel; Herman Hulman, who founded the Hulman Family empire and was a lifelong philanthropist; Chauncey Rose, businessman, railroad and land owner; Benjamin Sherman “Scatman” Crothers, singer and entertainer with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; Herald Cox, graduate of Indiana State Uni-versity and one of the United States’ top bacteriologists whose work helped lead to the polio vaccine, and Chicago Cubs and Hall of Fame pitcher Mordecai “Three Fingers” Brown.

New book includes area communities
St. Meinrad Archabbey and other communities are featured in a new book, “Indiana’s Catholic Religious Communities” by Jim Hillman and John Murphy. The book is the latest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series. The book boasts over 200 rare vintage photographic memories, most printed for the first time.
