CAJE works for justice

Catholic parishes in 2009 continued to collaborate with other congregations, as part of an organization known as Congregations Acting for Justice and Empowerment.

Involved congregations include the Evansville parishes of St. Anthony, St. Benedict and St. Mary, and St. John the Baptist Church in Newburgh. Other congregations include Presbyterian, Baptist and Unitarian Universalists.

CAJE expanded as an interfaith association in 2009 with the addition of Adath B’nai Israel Temple as a participating congregation, and the hiring of Myeda Hussein, a Muslim, as the lead organizer.

A large assembly was held in April 2009 at St. Benedict Cathedral, during which member congregations urged area political leaders to provide more affordable housing and to improve public transportation.

Father Steve Lintzenich, pastor of St. Mary Church in Evansville, and Pastor Larry Rascoe of Nazarene Baptist Church in Evansville, were elected in 2009 as co-chairs of the organization.
