Word begins to trickle in from Haiti connections

As the Message went to press on Wednesday morning, Jan. 13, some messages from Haiti were beginning to come through.

At St. Theresa Church in Evansville, Deacon Dave Seibert forwarded two emails that had been received from Sister Lucie Laquerre in Pilate.

The first message was brief.

“. . . I am afraid as I write to you, I am shaking. We are praying,  for our hospital is OK.”

The second continued.

“The earth is shaking a lot I try to stay awake. Port-au Prince has much damage. Cathedral, palace, hospitals. Pray for Haiti. Pilate is shaking much.”

At St. Joseph Church in Vanderburgh County, Father Gene Schroeder said he and others had been unable to communicate with contact in Haiti. He suggested that twinned parishes in the northern part of Haiti, if unaffected directly by the earthquake, would be indirectly affected as food and medicine supplies would be diverted away from their use and toward the southern area that was most affected.

Father Schroeder suggested that parishes might best make contributions to their “twins” in Haiti or to the Parish Twinning Programs of the Americas, headquartered in Nashville, Tenn.
