On the calendar: Praying for priests

Year for Priests logoIn conjunction with the Catholic Schools Office, the Message is publishing a calendar during the Year for Priests. Students and staff are committed to praying for a priest each day, and parishioners are invited to participate.

  • Monday, February 1: Father Sy Loehrlein
    • Father Sylvester N. Loehrlein, 81, is a native of Fulda, Ind. He studied for the priesthood at St. Meinrad Seminary and in Innsbruck. He was ordained March 18, 1956.
      In the early years of his priesthood, he held teaching and counseling positions at Memorial and Mater Dei high schools in Evansville, and served as co-chaplain at Marian Day School in Evansville.
      Over the years he was pastor of St. Bernard Church in Snake Run, St. John the Apostle Church in Evansville, St. Rupert Church in Red Brush, St. Martin Church in Chrisney, St. Peter Church in Montgomery, St. Patrick Church in Corning and St. Michael Church in Daviess County.
      Other ministries included apppointments as chaplain at the Evansville State Hospital, chaplain at St. Mary’s Medical Center, and spiritual director of the Evansville Particular Council of St. Vincent de Paul.
      He was pastor of St. Rupert Church at the time of his retirement in January 2004.
  • Tuesday, February 2: Father Bernie Lutz
    • Father Bernard A. Lutz, 72, is a native of Fort Branch. He studied for the priesthood at St. Meinrad and in Innsbruck. He did graduate studies at indiana University in the early years of his priesthood.
      He was ordained March 30, 1963, and first assigned to Sacred Heart Church in Vincennes as associate pastor. In 1964 he started the Newman Center in Vincennes and helped initiate the Indiana Newman Foun-dation in 1966.
      He started Campus Ministry at what was then Indiana State Univeristy-Evansville in 1972, and he was named diocesan coordinator of Ministry to Higher Education in 1975.
      His parish assignments included St. Vincent Orphanage and Church in Vincennes and the Evansville parishes of St. Boniface, St. Agnes, Christ the King and Holy Rosary. He was named pastor of St. Mary Church in Washington in 1989; then of Holy Cross Church in Fort Branch in 1991, adding St. Bernard Church in Snake Run in 2000.
      Father Lutz retired in April 2003; since May 2007, he has served as director of ministry to priests in the diocese.
  • Wednesday, February 3: Father Mike Madden
    • Father Michael T. Madden, 60, is a native of Washington, Ind. He studied for the priesthood at St. Meinrad Seminary and in Innsbruck, and was ordained Aug. 22, 1975. In addition to his parish ministry and work in the diocesan tribunal, he taught at Memorial High School in Evansville.
      He was named pastor of St. James Church in Haubstadt in 1984, and later served as Dean of the Princeton Deanery. He was named pastor of Holy Spirit Church in 1997, of St. Matthew Church in Mount Vernon in 1998, and of Holy Name Church in Bloomfield in 2002. Since 2008, he has added a second parish to his responsibilities, St. Peter Church in Linton.
  • Thursday, February 4: Father Gordon Mann
    • Father Gordon A. Mann, 50, is a native of Evansville. He studied for the priesthood at St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Ill., and at St. Meinrad Seminary. He was ordained June 6, 1992.
      He was first assigned to St. Joseph Church in Jasper, then to St. Simon Church in Washing-ton in 1994, as associate pastor.
      His first pastorate was St. Martin Church in Chrisney, with additional responsibilities as moderator of St. Nicholas Church in Santa Claus, in 1995. He moved to St. Wendel Church in St. Wendel in 2000.
      Father Mann was named pastor of St. Simon and St. Mary churches in Washington in 2004. In September 2008, the parishes joined together and Father Mann was named pastor of the newly named parish, Our Lady of Hope.
  • Friday, February 5:
    • On First Fridays, prayers are asked for school chaplains and parish pastors
