St. Matthew School to offer “Multiage Classroom”

Kindergarten and first grade students will be sitting side by side next fall, instead of in rooms apart from each other, as St. Matthew School in Mount Vernon launches an alternative approach to the traditional classroom.

The new arrangement will begin in the fall, each afternoon, with no more than 22 students in a classroom.

Second and third graders will also be together, as will fourth and fifth graders.

According to Vickie Wannemuehler, St. Matthew principal, children will benefit academically and socially. Older children will have opportunities to be leaders; younger students will learn mature and responsible behavior from the older students.

Open house and registration are planned Saturday, March 6, from 9 a.m. to noon, and Tuesday, March 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. Interested persons may call (812) 838-3621 for a private tour. See www.choosingmultiage.com or www.multiage-education.com.
