On the calendar: Praying for priests

Year for Priests logoIn conjunction with the Catholic Schools Office, the Message is publishing a calendar during the Year for Priests. Students and staff are committed to praying for a priest each day, and parishioners are invited to participate.

  • Monday, February 15 | Presidents’ Day
  • Tuesday, February 16 | Father Jim Rogers
    • Father James H. Rogers, 95, a retired priest of the diocese who resides in his home town of Beech Grove, Ind., was ordained May 30, 1939.
      His studies were at St. Meinrad Seminary.
      His parish service included Evansville, Mount Vernon, New Harmony and Newburgh. He also served as director of the Legion of Mary and Dean of the Newburgh Deanery.
      Father Rogers went to the South American missions in 1969, and returned in 1971 to parish work at Christ the King Church in Evansville. He also served as the diocesan director of Spanish Speaking Apostolate.
      He served as pastor of Holy Name Church in Bloomfield from 1977 until his retirement in 1979.
  • Wednesday, February 17 | Father Earl Rohleder
    • Jasper native Father Earl R. Rohleder, 73, was ordained March 30, 1963. He had studied at St. Meinrad Seminary and in Innsbruck.
      Since his retirement in 2003, he has lived in New Mexico, where he pursues his artistic passion producing metal sculptures.
      His ministry included parish work in Evansville, Whitfield, Daylight and Newburgh. He was named pastor of St. Anthony Church in Evansville in 1979; pastor of St. John the Apostle Church in Evansville in 1992; and pastor of Holy Name Church in New Harmony in 1996, where he continued until his retirement.
      He also served as part-time chaplain at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville.
  • Thursday, February 18 | Father John Sasse
    • Father John Sasse, 41, a member of the Legionaires for Christ, is on leave to the Diocese of Evansville, and appointed to parish work in June 2009.
      Father Sasse is the son of John Joseph and Sharon (Robuck) Sasse of Evansville. He is a graduate of Memorial High School in Evansville who en-tered the Legionaries of Christ in 1989. During his years of formation, he was in Brazil, Mexico, Italy, Germany, Poland and Spain. He was ordained a priest in Rome on Dec. 24, 2002.
      Since his ordation, he has furthered his studies in theology and held various positions in Rome, Monterery, Mexico, and most recently in the Netherlands.
      He is currently associate pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Haubstadt, Holy Cross Church in Fort Branch, and St. Bernard Church in Snake Run.
      He is fluent in several languages and has also been assigned to assist in ministry to the Spanish speaking.
  • Friday, February 19 | Father Jim Sauer
    • Father James E. Sauer observed his sixtieth birthday on Feb. 8. He was ordained March 25, 1977.
      He had studied at St. Meinrad Seminary and in Innsbruck.
      His ministry has included parish and diocesan assignments, teaching at Washington Catholic High School in Washington.
      His positions have included director of the secretariat on worship, director of continuing education for clergy, director of ministry to priests, and director of RCIA.
      He currently serves as associate pastor of St. Joseph Church in Jasper. His column, The Christ-ian Journey, appears weekly in the Message.
