Multi-age classrooms

Beginning this fall, St. Matthew School in Mount Vernon will pilot a multi-age classroom for half of each school day. Vickie Wannemuehler, principal, explains that this is “an in-novative and progressive way of teaching, using the method of Differentiated Instruction.

“Academically, it provides greater flexibility for working with students at differing skill levels, and it helps each child develop to his/her greatest po-tential. Socially, a multi-age environment provides all children with the opportunity to be leaders when they are the older students in the class, thus building self-esteem.

“Meanwhile, the younger students learn mature and responsible behavior from the older students; they also benefit from having peer mentors to help them adjust to a new classroom.”

She said that class size will be limited. “Ideally, there will not be more than 22 children in a multi-age class. The multi-age classroom will be in effect for half of each school day, blending classes of kindergarten and first graders, second with third graders, and fourth with fifth grade students. We are very excited about offering this alternative method of teaching in our community.”
