People We Care About
Following is a feature in the Message, designed to help draw together the People of God in southwestern Indiana. Readers are invited to submit information about people who may benefit by some extra prayers and attention.
• Charlene L. Cotton, 82, died Feb. 14. She is the grandmother of Matt Miller, diocesan director of Worship.
She was born in Vincennes to Chandler and Nellie (Bowman) James. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Edward R. Cotton.
Survivors also include her daughter, Donna Miller of Newburgh, grandsons, David Miller, Kevin Miller and Mark Miller, a great-grandson, Isaac Miller, and her sister, Mary Martin.
A memorial service was held Feb. 19 at St. John the Baptist Church in Newburgh.
• Daughter of Charity Sister Clare Elizabeth Hogan, 83, died in Mobile, Ala., on Jan. 30.
Sister Clare entered the Community in 1943 and served as a Daugh-ter of Charity for 66 years.
She first ministered as a teacher in Keokuk, Iowa. After graduating from Catholic Univer-sity, Washington, D.C., she served as a social worker in South San Gabriel, Calif.; Coving-ton, Ky.; Jackson, Miss.; and Evansville. She opened and directed the office of Catholic Charities in Natchez, Miss., for many years. In Mobile, she served as administrator of St. Mary’s Home and, most recently, as a counselor at 2-B Choices for Women of Catholic Social Services.
Her Mass of Resurrection was held in Mobile on February 3.
• Daughter of Charity Sister Mary Ellen Creedon, 78, in Chicago, on Feb. 8.
She began her postulancy as a Daughter of Charity at St. Philomena in St. Louis, Mo. Once she had completed her initial formation, Sister Mary Ellen was sent to St. Joseph Hospital, Chicago, to study nursing. Sister Mary Ellen served there as a nursing supervisor for eight years before returning to St. Louis to study for a BSN at Marillac College. She then served as a medical-surgical supervisor at St. Mary Hospital in Evansville, and then as a supervisor for the Visiting Nurses Association and for the Direc-tor Home Care Program of Cardinal Ritter Institute in St. Louis.
She worked with migrants at Catholic Social Services in Del Ray, Cal. After the completion of a master’s degree in Public Health at the University of Michigan in 1971, Sister was assigned to do outreach work at St. Margaret Hospital, Montgomery, Ala. For the next six years she served both in this capacity and as local superior. She worked in Quality Assurance at St. Thomas Hospital, Nashville, Tenn., until she was asked to minister as assistant administrator of Regina Continuing Care Center in Evansville. She then went to Allen Memorial Home in Mobile, Ala., to work in Home Health Care and to serve as the local superior. In 1987, Sister Mary Ellen was sent to St. Vincent de Paul Center, Chicago, to perform the duties of assistant program director of the Senior Services until 1998. Sister continued as a volunteer in the Senior Services Program and, most recently, as a tutor at Casa Providencia.
Services were held at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Chicago on Feb. 13.
