A Parenting Pointer

Even though it’s hard economic times, I’m quitting my job — as “Reminder-In-Chief.” As our children grow older they should take more responsibility for remembering their homework, the time to get up, their chores. Teach them ways to remind themselves. Don’t stunt their growth by doing it for them.

A Marriage Moment

What is your marriage founded on? When George Washington became the first president of the USA he had little idea how this fledgling country would evolve. So too, most of us are relatively naïve on our wedding day. Let a penny be a reminder of your wedding vows, “In God we trust.”

Archabbey exhibit features Santa Fe artist

The Archabbey Library Gallery at St. Meinrad is presenting an art exhibit by Santa Fe, N.M., artist Gabriel Vigil, who specializes in artwork of saints. The exhibit will be on display March 1 through April 10.

Vigil’s two-dimensional art is called retablos, and the three-dimensional sculptural pieces are known as bultos. This traditional art form originated centuries ago in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. He has been producing his creations since he was a teenager.

A native of New Mexico, Vigil has completed numerous commissions for private collections, including the Denver Folk Art Museum and the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art in Santa Fe. In 1998, he and his brother Gilbert Vigil were commissioned by The City of Santa Fe for a retablo of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, which was presented to Hillary Rodham Clinton. The retablo is now part of the Smithsonian Collection.

Other commissioned works by Vigil include life-size paintings of The Stations of The Cross and murals for St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Phoenix, Ariz., as well as various churches throughout the Southwest. Galleries where he has exhibited his art are: El Potrero Trading Post in Chimayo, N.M.; Good Hands Gallery, Montez Gallery, Gallery 10 and Rancho de las Golondrinas in Santa Fe; John Isaac’s Gallery in Albuquerque, N.M.; and Blue Sage Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ.
