Memorial’s two ice hockey teams made for an all MHS final in the Old National Bank High School League Champ-ionship at Evansville’s Swon-der Ice Arena.
The Memorial White team defeated the Blue team in a hard fought 6-5 victory. MHS fielded two hockey teams this year divided by classes; MHS freshmen and sophomores play for the White team, while juniors and seniors play for the MHS Blue team.
The high school league also fields teams from Harrison, North, Reitz, and Castle.
The tourney began on Feb. 8 and featured Memorial Blue as the fourth seed with a 6-4 regular season record facing the 5th seed Castle. The Blue team defeated Castle and moved on to a semi-final contest against the number one seed Harrison. The Blue team defeated the number one seeded Warriors 2-0 to advance to the champion-ship.
Memorial White entered the tourney as the number two seed with a regular season record of 8-1-1 and played Reitz, the number three seed to a close 5-4 come from behind victory to advance to the cham-pionship.
The White team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period but the Blue team answered with four goals in the second to make it 5-4 White. The Blue team tied the game early in the third period but White scored the game winner with seven minutes remaining in the final frame to edge the Blue 6-5 before a raucous MHS crowd.
