On the calendar: Praying for priests

Year for Priests logoIn conjunction with the Catholic Schools Office, the Message is publishing a calendar during the Year for Priests. Students and staff are committed to praying for a priest each day, and parishioners are invited to participate.

  • Monday, March 8 | Father Ted Tempel
    • Father Theodore G. Tempel, 72, was ordained May 23, 1964. He is an Evansville native who studied at St. Meinrad Seminary.
      His assignments have included assistant pastor positions at St. Joseph Church in Jasper and St. Anthony Church in Evansville. He was named pastor of St. Anthony Church in 1973, then of St. Theresa, also in Evansville, in 1979.
      Father Tempel was pastor of Good Shepherd Church in Evansville from 1993 until his retirement in 2002. He continues priestly ministry as chaplain at Little Sisters of the Poor in Evansville.
  • Tuesday, March 9 | Father Tim Tenbarge
    • Father Timothy A. Tenbarge, 62, has been pastor of St. An-thony Church in St. Anthony since 1997, and also of Sacred Heart Church in Schnellville since 2005.
      He is a native of Evansville who studied at St. Meinrad Seminary, and was ordained May 26, 1973.
      His early assignments as associate pastor included Holy Spirit Church in Evansville, and Sacred Heart and St. Francis Xavier churches in Vincennes; he also taught at Rivet High School in Vincennes.
      Father Tenbarge was assigned to residence at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Vincennes in 1975, then as administrator of the parish in 1976.
      He was named associate pastor of St. Joseph Church in Jasper in 1982; pastor of St. Philip Neri Church in Bicknell in 1990, and then to his current appointment in 1997.
  • Wednesday, March 10 | Father Jean Vogler
    • Father Jean E. Vogler is a Jasper native, who studied at St. Meinrad and in Innsbruck. He was ordained Feb. 28, 1970 and celebrated his fortieth anniversary on Feb. 28 of this year. Click here for our anniversary story
  • Thursday, March 11 | Father Ken Walker
    • Since 2002, Father J. Kenneth Walker has served as Judicial Vicar, head of the diocesan tribunal, for the Diocese of Evansville. He also continues to provide weekend sacramental assistance at parishes in Martin County.
      Father Walker, 56, is a native of Daviess County who studied for the priesthood at St. Meinrad, and was ordained May 29, 1981.
      He completed graduate studies in canon law at St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada. After receiving his License in Canon Law, he was named adjutant judicial vicar in 1989.
      Over the years he has provided weekend sacramental assistance in Evansville, Newburgh and in parishes in Daviess and Martin counties.
  • Friday, March 12 | Father Robert Wannemuehler
    • Father Robert J. Wannemuehler, 84, retired from active ministry in 1996, continuing for several years as a chaplain at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.
      He is a native of St. Philip, Posey County, who studied at St. Meinrad and was ordained May 27, 1965.
      His early years included par-ish work in Evansville, Jasper, Oakland City, Bramble, Crane Naval Depot and Montgomery.
      He was appointed chaplain at Deaconess Hospital in 1968, and continued there while re-siding at parishes in the area.
