Hats off!
“Hats off to the seventh grade gals that gave up their Saturday to do a service project in Washington,” writes Shirley Jeffers, youth minister at St. John Church, Loogootee.
“We helped with the food give-away sponsored by ‘Feed My Sheep’ held at Washington Towers. The gals helped folks carry their bags of groceries up to their apartments.
“Thanks to our driver, Brian Sutton, and chaperones Mary Anderson and Noel Harty. Those gals going along were Allie Walker, Deidre Nolan, Adalyn Arvin, Waylee Wagoner and Ashley Jones.

Anniversary of ordination
Father Joseph Ziliak, pastor of St. John the Baptist Church, Newburgh, was ordained to the priesthood April 7, 1962.

“Next year, Mrs. Ambrose passes the director’s chair to Maggie Arabia who has served as her assistant for four years now.”
Student recognition
Resurrection School sixth grader, Melissa Roales, has earned the title “Community Partner of the Year” for Region 8 of the National Association of Social Workers. “Melissa’s service projects include the ‘Bea-nies for Baghdad; project, volunteering at the Vincennes Community Food Pantry, and raising money for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry,” said Angie Johnson, principal.
“Melissa is an inspiring example for all of us.”
DAR honors
Memorial High School senior Thomas DeCastra has been honored by the Capt. Henry Vanderburgh Chapter of the National Society of DAR. He was selected by the Memorial faculty as strongly exhibiting qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism which earned him the Good Citizen Award from Memorial. He then had to write an impromptu essay on a topic sel-ected by the DAR. His essay was selected by the Chapter to submit to State.
Geography Bee
Nathan Egler, a seventh grader at St. Joseph School, Vanderburgh County, has qualified for the Indiana Geographic Bee.
He will compete against 100 finalists in Indianapolis on April 9.
Disability Awareness
As part of celebrating March as Disability Awareness Month, Good Shepherd kindergartners and first graders participated in the Hop-n-ing to ben-efit the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center. They raised $1,929.50, all of which will stay locally.
Students raising over $100 have been invited to participate in the check presentation during the Easter Seals Telethon on April 11. Those students are: Sam Syroney $261, Reid Wil-son $180, Mia Carter $141, Max Hermann $100, and Theresa Blanke $100.
Jonathan Shafer has won the school’s Disability Awareness poster contest.
Honorable mention
Reece Beckman, Jared Welp and Alexis Lilly have received honorable mention in the annual writing contest sponsored by Southern Hills Counseling Cen-ter and the Friends of Southern Hills.
They are students at Holy Family School, Jasper.
