Catholic radio could do what Jesus did through preaching
To the editor:
What if we had Catholic radio for the Diocese of Evansville?
Well, some advantages would be Catholic hymns, catholic news, interviews with converts, call-in questions and answers, advertising of events, live coverage of Masses and other events, invitation to lapsed Catholics and Protestants and unbelievers to hear the richness of faith, stengthen the faith with good Bible study and teaching, listeners have the freedom to tune in or out.
Is radio another good way to inspire and attract people to this “new evangelization”? Some of us think so.
The most successful of Protestant and Catholic radio stations are listener supported. Less than half of Catholics attend Mass regularly and maybe less than that read the Bible, catechism or other Catholic literature daily. Radio can fill the gap.
Pope John Paul II said, “Radio offeres perhaps the closest equivalent today of what Jesus was able to do with large groups through his preaching. Radio is an intimate mediuym which can reach people in the streets, in their cars or in their homes. Radio may well be the most cost-effective means of raching large numbers of people who may lack exposure to Catholic publications — but will be willing to “eavesdrop” on Catholic radio stations or programming.
