St. Mary’s needs votes for grant

St. Mary’s Health System is one of one thousand non-profit organizations nationwide competing for a Pepsi Refresh Grant. The top ten organizations with the most votes by April 30 will be awarded $50,000 each. St. Mary’s plans to use the money to help combat childhood obesity in the Tri-State area. The St. Mary’s Smart Futures Pediatric Weight Management Class is a six-week program de-signed to help families of children who are at risk for developing chronic disease from being overweight.

Day at the Shrine for marriage enrichment

Mary Jo Pedersen, a noted author, will guide couples in a day of marriage enrichment at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Ill., Saturday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Included will be presentations by Pedersen, times for quiet reflection and sharing between spouses, discussion and prayer. Mass will begin at 5 p.m. for those who wish to attend.

Pedersen has been a teacher, trainer and author in the areas of family ministry, marriage spirituality and parenting for over 25 years. She has authored several books and writes for “Faith Alive” published by Catholic News Ser-vice.

Cost for the marriage enrichment program, lunch included, is $49 per couple.

Earth Day at the Woods

Plans are being finalized for the 12th annual Earth Day celebration at White Violet Center for Eco-Justice at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Festivities begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. EDT on Saturday, April 17.

This family-friendly event is sponsored by the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods near Terre Haute. This year’s theme will focus on “going local.”

An information booth will feature educational materials on the importance of supporting local farmers, artisans, crafters, businesses and the economic and environmental impact of these choices.

Additional features include live folk music, various vendors, the alpaca herd on display and light lunch items will be available for purchase.

Other fun items on the docket include a kids’ area, a bake sale by the Sisters of Providence, a horse drawn trolley and tours of the organic farm, straw bale house and more. Honoring Mary in the month of May

St. Meinrad Archabbey’s pilgrimages to honor the Blessed Mother at the Monte Cassino Shrine have been scheduled for the Sundays in May.

The pilgrimages begin with an opening hymn and a short sermon, followed by a rosary procession. The service ends with the Litany of the Blessed Virgin and a hymn. Speakers and topics for the pilgrimages are:

  • May 2: Benedictine Father Gabriel Hodges: “Blessed Mother, Show Us the Way”
  • May 9: Benedictine Father Harry Hagan: “Our Lady of Einsiedeln, Pray for Us”
  • May 16: Benedictine Brother Luke Waugh: “Mary, Mother of Conversion”
  • May 23: Benedictine Brother Thomas Gricoski: “A Mother Knows”
  • May 30: Benedictine Father Meinrad Brune: “Mary, Woman of Few Words”

Services begin at 2 p.m. Central Daylight Time. The public is invited. The Mon-te Cassino Shrine is located one mile east of the Archabbey on State Highway 62 in St. Meinrad.

Lexington priest to deliver lecture on St. John Vianney

The Institute for Priests and Presbyterates of St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology will present a free lecture on Monday, April 19, on “The Challenge of St. John Vianney Today.”

The speaker will be Father Albert DeGiacomo of Lexington, Ky. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. CDT in the Newman Conference Center on the St. Meinrad campus.

Father DeGiacomo is pastor of Holy Spirit Parish, the Newman Center, at the University of Kentucky. A native of Boston, he holds graduate degrees in both English and pastoral ministry from Boston College and a PhD in drama from Tufts University.

A professor of English and theatre at Mount Aloysius College in Pa. and Berea College in Ky., he also taught in high schools in Massachusetts and Connecticut. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wisc., in May 2008. He was ordained a priest on May 17, 2008.

Memorial hospital to honor employees

Ten Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center employees have been nominated for the 2010 Little Company of Mary Award, named for the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary, the religious organization that sponsors Memorial Hospital.

Nominated by their co-workers for their exemplary devotion to the hospital’s Mission and Core Values in their daily work, the nominees include: Kaye Anders, Finance; Sister Maura Beckman, Pastoral Care; Elvira ‘Vera’ Crutchfield, Facility Services; Gissella Cruz, Medical Services; Linda Hoffman, Surgical Services; Louise ‘Lou Ann’ Lueken, Medical Services; Verna Schaefer, Medical Services; Jane Schaeffer, Surgical Services; Abby Schmitt, Medical Services; and Johannah Seng, Patient Financial Services.

Nominees will be honored at Memorial Hospital’s LCM Awards Tea reception on Friday, April 16, and the winner will be announced during National Hospital Week, May 9-15.
