Four Catholic schools in Evansville will each get an estimated $80,000 share of a $2 million dollar grant to Vanderburgh County to counter obesity.
The schools are Corpus Christi, Good Shepherd, Holy Spirit and West Side Catholic, according to Donna Halverson, director of the diocesan Office of Schools.
“Each school will receive about $80,000 over a two-year period to implement the healthy schools initiative, HEROES, based on a model from the Centers for Disease Conrol,” Halverson said.
The awards are part of a $2 million grant from the “Communities Putting Prevention to Work” initiative of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Welborn Baptist Foundation is the lead partner for the local participation, and announced the reception of the grant in March. Catholic Schools participating in the initiative were not announced at the time.
The four Catholic school principals recently met with Halverson to discuss how the grant will be used. They are Martha Craig from Corpus Christi, Judy VanHoosier from Good Shepherd, Nancy Mills from Holy Spirit and Cynthia Schneider from West Side Catholic.
