Cornerstone reaches agreement, to remain open

The Cornerstone Catholic Books and Gifts in Evansville is being acquired by Artex Corp. in a proposed agreement between the two businesses, according to a news release from the Cornerstone.

The offer to acquire came immediately after the announcement last week that the store would be closing after 27 years.

“We are so excited to be able to continue the fine tradition of The Cornerstone as a premier book and gift store serving the local Catholic and Christian community,” said Melanie Sei-bert, President of Artex Corp, a family owned and operated school uniform retailer in Evansville.

“To have Melanie come along so quickly and agree to continue it is truly another example of God working in mysterious ways,” said Anne Simms, current owner.

Store Manager, Kimberly Marsh, has been with The Cornerstone for sixteen years and will continue in her role in the new combined enterprise.

The sale is expected to be completed by the end of July. The store location will be moved in August from its current location at 4671 Bayard Park Drive to the Artex location at 1424 North Royal Avenue in Evansville.

Richard Burek to retire from Mater Dei, Memorial

Richard Burek, who served the students of Memorial and Mater Dei for six years as Facil-ities Manager for both schools, is retiring. According to a news release, Burek professionally enhanced the planning for and management of projects and facilities related records, as well as the purchasing, contracting and procurement practices.

In addition to his overall management of the Memorial and Mater Dei grounds, buildings, heating and cooling and plumbing and other systems, and his direct supervision of the maintenance/custodial staff at both schools, Richard could often be found personally performing a variety of repairs and improvements wherever and whenever needed.

“It was not unusual for Richard to be on campus overnight during retreats and other student events to insure a high level of security for the students and prompt reaction to any facility issue that might arise.”

Burek’s retirement coincides with the July 1 transition of the high schools to the new governance model. At the request of both the Mater Dei and Memorial Boards of Trustees, Burek has agreed to re-main as an advisor until the start of the new school year in order to assure orderly transfer of information about facilities, procedures and ongoing summer projects.
