FROM DAVIESS COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

A Daviess Community Hospital physician who recently retired after over 30 years of service, Dr. Jerry Hancock, has received the prestigious Doc Hollywood Award from the Indiana Rural Health Association. The award was presented to Dr. Hancock by IRHA Executive Director, Don Kelso, at a retirement reception held June 22 in Washington.

The award gets its name from the book, Doc Hollywood, by Neil Shulman, MD.  Dr. Shulman was known as the original Doc Hollywood and his book was made into a major motion picture starring Michael J. Fox in 1991.

The Doc Hollywood award is presented to recognize Indiana physicians who have shown outstanding dedication toward improving healthcare in rural and underserved community. Dr. Hancock was nominated by Daviess Community Hospital CEO, Gary Kendrick, and Marketing Manager, Mary Smith.

In the nomination, Kendrick wrote, “Dr. Hancock has been consistent in taking care of our patients compassionately and professionally by doing the “extras” like working an acutely ill patient into his busy schedule or by calling a worried patient personally and explaining lab results as soon as he receives them.  His long history with us has been one filled with many examples of professional medical care delivered with a personal touch — all done in a changing practice environment.  He is most deserving of this award.”

Prior to his retirement this month, Dr. Hancock was a family medicine physician at the DCH Medical Clinic in Washington.
