Margie Nord to coordinate Catholic Center, Sarto activities

Margie Nord has accepted the position of Activities Coordinator at the Catholic Center and Sarto Retreat House in Evansville.

She succeeds Julie Young, who has recently accepted a position at St. John the Baptist School in Newburgh.

Nord’s “years of experience as the manager of the family business will serve her well in her new role,” said Tim McGuire, chief operating officer of the Diocese of Evansville. “In addition, her four years of experience at the Catholic Center will make for a smooth transition into her new role.”

Promotion at Abbey Caskets

Jennifer Keller of Evanston, Ind., has been promoted to the position of director of Abbey Caskets in St. Meinrad. She succeeds Patrick Clark of St. Croix, Ind., who is currently the director of physical facilities for St. Meinrad Archabbey.

Keller was hired as the marketing and sales associate for Abbey Caskets in August 2004. Since January 2005, she has served as the operations manager.

Keller graduated in 2003 from the University of Southern Indiana with a bachelor’s degree in advertising.

Abbey Caskets was established in 1999 by the Benedictine monks of St. Meinrad Arch-abbey. The firm offers handcrafted caskets and cremation urns, made of hardwoods such as poplar, oak, walnut and cherry and sells directly to the public.

Next week: Details of Holiday World drawing

The July 16 issue of the Message will be mailed to every registered household in the Diocese of Evansville.

Among features in next week’s issue will be details of a drawing for free tickets to Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari. Names of subscribers will be drawn at random, along with names from Facebook friends and Twitter followers.

The general admission tickets are good for any day of the 2010 operating season.

New Spanish Mass at Holy Spirit, Evansville

On May 16, Father Dusty Burns began to celebrate Mass in Spanish at Holy Spirit Church in Evansville every Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m.

This Mass is to accommodate the many restaurant workers who cannot attend the noon Mass at Nativity and was scheduled at the initiative of Father Henry Kuykendall, pastor of Nativity Church.

Guadalupe Center receives Immigration recognition

In mid May, the Diocese of Evansville Guadalupe Center applied to the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) for recognition of the Center’s work with immigration clients, issues and applications.

On June 22 approval was granted to the Guadalupe Center as an official “BIA recognized not-for-profit” center.

In addition to the Center’s recognition, two staff members — Helen M. Vásquez and Benedictine Sister Joan Scheller — received BIA accreditation. This affords Guadalupe Center greater outreach to the immigrants of the diocese seeking assistance and guidance with immigration applications, questions and concerns.

ESL classes resume in August

Fifteen English-as-a-Second Language students received achievement certificates on May 12 at the Guadalupe Center.

ESL classes will begin again on August 18. Classes will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

The cost is $2 per class. Scholarships are available.
