People We Care About
Following is a feature in the Message, designed to help draw together the People of God in southwestern Indiana. Readers are invited to submit information about people who may benefit by some extra prayers and attention.
• Father Raymond Kuper, a retired priest of the Diocese of Evansville, has a new address. Cards may be sent to him at the Protestant Home, 3701 Washington Avenue, Evansville IN 47714.
• Daughter of Charity Sister Mary Louis Price, 93, died July 12 at Seton Residence in Evansville.
She was born in Lockport, La., one of seven children of James and Marie Delacroix Price.
Before joining the Daughters of Charity, she graduated from St. Basil Academy in Plaquemine, La., and completed a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Southwest Louisiana in 1939.
She entered the Daughters at St. Louis in October of 1950. After a period of formation, she became a teacher at St. Vincent’s School in Perryville, Mo., and then at Guardian Angel Settlement in St. Louis. Sister received a master’s degree in social work from St. Louis Univer-sity in 1964.
For the next 23 years, she held administrative positions in social agencies run by the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis and Kansas City, Mo.; San Antonio and El Paso, Texas; and New Orleans, La. In 1987, Sister re-turned to St. Louis, where she worked for Catholic Community Hous-ing, Guardian Angel Settlement, Marillac Provincial House and Rosati and Caritas Centers.
Sister Mary Louis came to Seton Residence from St. Louis in June of 2006, where she became active in the Ministry of Prayer. Sister was a Gold Card member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers and had been a member of the National Association of Social Workers.
Survivors include her sisters, Marcelle Pfenninger of Bloomington, Ind., and Ora Harroun of Pinehurst, N.C.
Mass of the Resurrection was held July 16.
• Daughter of Charity Sister Josephine Tarquini, 100, died July 16.
She was born in 1910, in Italy. When she was only five years old, Sister lost all of her family during an earthquake in that country. She was trapped for days and was adopted by her rescuers, Umberto and Agnes Mellen (Kent) Olivieri. At the age of 74, her father became an ordained priest and served the Otomi Indians in Mexico for 15 years, until his death in 1973.
Sister Josephine completed certification in social work from Simmons College in Boston, Mass., in 1930. She joined the Daughters on October 20, 1932. Sister earned a registered nurse’s certificate in 1934 from DePaul School of Nursing in St. Louis, and served as head nurse of the Pediatric Department at DePaul Hospital in St. Louis until 1935. For the next 22 years, Sister Josephine was a nurse, social worker and recreation director at DePaul Settlement in Chicago.
After serving for a short time at St. Elizabeth Home in New Orleans, La., she began a 20-year ministry in Indianapolis in 1958. During this time, Sister served at St. Vincent Hospital and was local superior at St. Vincent Residence.
Sister Josephine came to Seton Manor in Evansville in 1978 to work in the library and assist with oral histories and translations. One year later, she moved to Montgomery, Ala., continuing her translation work and serving as activities director at Seton Haven until 1988. From that time, until her death, Sister Josephine lived at Seton Residence and was in Prayer Ministry.
A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated in Seton Chapel on July 20.
• Franciscan Sister Margaret Mary Hollingsworth, formerly Sister Mary Ambrose, 85, died July 15. She was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis in Oldenburg, Ind.
She was born in 1925 in Morganfield, Ky., the daughter of Myrtle (Mills) and Earl Holl-ingsworth.
She entered the convent in 1944 and made her final vows on August 12, 1949. She spent 28 years as a teacher in Indiana including St. Joseph School and Rex Mundi High School, both in Evansville.
In 1974 she changed careers, entering the nursing field as an LPN. She spent 11 years at Braun’s Nursing Home in Evansville, where she was able to care for her mother who became a resident. Following her mother’s death, Sister Margaret Mary spent the next 11 years with Beverly Home Health Care in Indianapolis before retiring to the Motherhouse in 2003
Survivors include her sisters Catherine Bennett of Evansville and Dorothy Blades of Dixon, Ky., and her brothers Charles Hollingsworth and Paul Hollingsworth, both of Evansville.
Funeral services were held July 19 at the motherhouse chapel.
