Bishop Emeritus John M. D’Arcy of Fort Wayne-South Bend will speak at St. Benedict Cathedral in Evansville on Thursday, Nov. 4.

The Respect Life Celebration will begin at 5:30 p.m. Central time with Mass celebrated by Bishop Gerald A. Gettelfinger and concelebrated with priests of the diocese.

Dinner will follow in the Woodward Center in St. Benedict Hall, where Bishop D’Arcy will be the featured speaker on “Rediscovering the Value of Life.”

He was ordained as Auxiliary Bishop for Boston in 1975, then installed as Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend in 1985.

Bishop D’Arcy made national headlines in 2008 when he announced he would not attend graduation ceremonies at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend where President Obama, who supports abortion rights, had been invited to be the keynote speaker.

According to published reports, he said, “For me to attend could say to the young people ‘That’s ok’. For a Catholic, it’s not ok.”

Cost to attend the Nov. 4 presentation is $20 per person and includes a plated meal. Paid reservations must be made by Oct. 28. Checks are payable to Catholic Charities, 123 N.W. 4th St, Suite 603, Evansville, IN 47708. Contact Emily Snipes (812) 423-5456 or esnipes@evdio.org.
