Sr. Karlene, St. Ben principal, receives national recognition

By MICHELLE PRIAR (Assistant Superintendent, Diocesan Catholic Schools)

Benedictine Sister Karlene SensmeierEach year the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) recognizes outstanding Catholic administrators throughout the United States. We’re so pleased that this year Benedictine Sister Karlene Sensmeier has been nominated for NCEA’s Distinguished Principal Award. She is well-deserving of this nomination, and we are so proud to have her represent the Diocese of Evansville. Her creative leadership has inspired many teachers and students throughout the years. In addition her longstanding commitment to Catholic education has earned her the respect of students, teachrs, colleagues, and the community at large.

In the 29 years that Sister Karlene has served as a principal she has touched many lives. Her nurturing spirit has a way of leaving a lasting impression.

Joan Fredrich, principal at Holy Rosary, was once a student under Sister Karlene’s tenure as a principal. She recalls, “Our parish school was our family. Everyone knew and respected Sister Karlene. She was present everywhere, in our classrooms, in the hallways, in the cafeteria, on the playground, at our ballgames. (She knew sports, which made her especially cool to students) During the annual eighth grade vs. faculty softball game, you’d think all the students would be cheering for the eighth grade, but we just wanted to see Sister Karlene crank that ball over the fence, which she frequently did! I remember thinking she’s part of my family. I remember her faith felt big to me. I remember thinking Sister Karlene really cares about what happens to us, about our souls.”

Pete Werner, teacher at St. Benedict Cathedral School, said “It is a great honor to be recognized by the NCEA for being a Distinguished Principal. At the same time, it would be a great honor for the NCEA to be represented by such an outstanding educational and community leader as Sister Karlene Sensmeier.”

Daryl Hagan, superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Evansville, said, “In the past 10 years the enrollment at St. Benedict Cathedral School has doubled. The growth is attributed to Sister Karlene. Her nurturing presence, high academic expectations for students, parents, faculty and staff, and her strong faith-filled spirit have led families to choose St. Benedict as a partner in forming their children in the faith.”

Reaching Minds, Touching Hearts, Shaping Souls is the tagline you see prominently displayed in the hallway at St. Benedict. These words are there to describe the overall philosophy of St. Benedict Cathedral School, but those who know Sister Karlene would agree that these words also describe her. She works tirelessly to make sure all students have what they need to be successful. She always finds time to make personal connections with those around her and she inspires us all to fill our hearts with God’s spirit! We’re blessed to celebrate with her this outstanding recognition.
