St. Theresa School receives $1,200 U-ACT grant
St. Theresa School is being recognized by the Red Robin Foundation U-ACT Program, according to Nancy Mills, principal of the Evansville school.
“It’s a nationwide program that honors schools that exemplify kindness to others and who show community support through unbridled acts or random acts of kindness.
“The goal of this program is to encourage kindness among students and help create a sense of neighborliness inside and outside of school settings.”
She said her students “look for chances to help the community,” noting this year they have done the following for the Evansville community: held a canned food drive for St. Vin-cent DePaul, collected toys for the Ozanam Family Shelter and collected hats, gloves and scarves for The Lucas House.
They made donations to the House of Bread and Peace, and a collection during Lent for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.
The students tied fleece blankets for the Humane Society, participated in a weekly recycling program, raised money to become a Miracle School for Riley’s Children Hospital, participated in the Easter Seals Hop-A-Thon, and were Partners in Healing with St. Mary’s Pediatrics.
Mills said, “We were notified that St. Theresa School was one of the top 10 recipients of this nationwide grant!” The school received a check in the amount of $1,200, a banner to hang at school, and a check in the amount of $250 to host a special celebration with the students.
The teachers and the students are “brainstorming” ideas on ways to spend the money, Mills said.
“We received the money for giving to the community so we are looking for ideas to give back even more!”
