Mother Teresa Service Award recipients serve people in need

Editor’s note: Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Evansville honored parish-nominated recipients of Mother Teresa Service Awards May 19. The Message continues a series of articles, with biographical material provided by Catholic Charities.

The Hochgesang Family

St. Anthony, St. Anthony

The Hochgesang family, Fronie and her three daughters, Linda, Cindy and Brenda, are very faithful to living the Gospel values. Doing many behind‐the‐scenes tasks, they have faithfully cleaned the church for more than 30 years. They have reached out to help those who are less fortunate by providing meals, groceries, and clothing. Brenda has served as Sacristan for many years, is also Catechist Assistant for Religious Education classes, and offers her creative abilities in providing bulletin boards, hallway displays, and posters for Sacramental and other celebrations. There is no doubt, the Hochgesangs are an inspiration to many who have witnessed their service to others.

Larry and Melina Hurm

St. Bernard, Rockport

St. Bernard Parish nominates the husband and wife team of Larry and Melina Hurm for the Mother Teresa Award. After visiting the parish of St. Therese in Gaspar, Haiti, in 2007, Larry returned with a driving need to help the people of Haiti. Larry and his wife, Melina, have organized a community ecumenical softball event, youth bake sales, a family and friends yearly picnic event, and a horse and buggy to rent to wedding parties and special events; all proceeds going to the parish of Saint Therese. “In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love.” Mother Teresa
