Schools across the diocese approved for vouchers
By MARY ANN HUGHES (Message staff writer)
In a matter of days, Catholic schools all over the Diocese of Evansville will be opening their classroom doors. What’s different this year is their participation in the new statewide voucher program.
All three Catholic schools in Jasper, Holy Family, Precious Blood and John Paul the Great, are participating in the program and are currently accepting vouchers from qualifying families for the 2011-2012 school year.
Children in grades two through 12 who previously attended a public school for the prior two semesters are eligible to apply. According to Elizabeth Flatt, principal at John Paul the Great Catholic High School, “A student in a family of four that earns approximately $40,000 could receive a voucher for as much as about $5,000. Children from a family of four that earns about $60,000 per year could receive a voucher for as much as about $3,000.”
She said, “This provides local families a new option that they may have not had before. It gives the families a choice for their children’s education that they may not have been able to afford before.”
Participating schools, as of July 25, also include Christ the King School, Corpus Christi School, Good Shepherd School, Holy Redeemer School, Holy Rosary School, Holy Spirit School, Mater Dei High School, Reitz Memorial High School, Resurrection School, St. Benedict Cathedral School, St. Theresa School and Westside Catholic Schools, all in Evansville; St. James School, Haubstadt; St. Matthew School, Mount Vernon; St. John the Baptist School, Newburgh; St. Philip School, Posey County; St. Joseph School, Princeton; St. Bernard School, Rockport; St. Wendel School, St. Wendel; St. Joseph, Vanderburgh County, and the three Washington Catholic schools.
Interested families should contact participating schools directly for more information.
