Mother Teresa Service Award recipients serve people in need

Editor’s note: Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Evansville honored parish-nominated recipients of Mother Teresa Service Awards May 19. The Message continues a series of articles, with biographical material provided by Catholic Charities.

Andrew (posthumously) and Pauline Kern

Mary, Help of Christians, Mariah Hill

Andrew and Pauline Kern were part of a select group of people who formed the first St. Vincent de Paul Society at Mary, Help of Christians in 1964. They have always been active in the church. For many years, Andrew cared for the grounds and maintenance of the parish, while Pauline was active with the Ladies Sodality and provided flowers to beautify the church. They were also ushers and Eucharistic ministers who brought our Lord to the homebound, nursing homes and hospitals. Though Andrew died in 2004, Pauline continues to lead her family and our Church to Christ by doing “small things with great love.”

Sr. Mary Jane Kiesel

St. Joseph, Jasper

Sister Mary Jane Kiesel was nominated because of her love and compassion for the sick and elderly and their families in our community. She is always looking out for their needs. She makes arrangements for the homebound to receive communion, rides to Mass, rides to doctors’ appointments, financial assistance needs, grocery shopping or whatever their needs are. She is such a support to the widows in our parish. She is a wonderful example of doing “small things with great love.”
