Education and Formation

When and where did you begin formal study to the priesthood? [I began] formal study in the fall at Bruté Seminary. [I attended] Holy Cross School (K-5), Fort Branch Community (6-8) and Gibson Southern (9-12).

What other formation programs or processes have you completed? TEC [Teens Encounter Christ]; One Bread One Cup.

What’s next? What education or formation do you expect to achieve before ordination? I will most likely study at St. Meinrad after earning my degree in Catholic Studies at Bruté/Marian.

Your Vocation

Who — or what — affirms you as a seminarian? All of the above. My parents are very supportive, as well as my pastor, Father Tony, and other priests. The parishioners at Holy Cross affirm me often. Also I enjoy working TECs and attending other retreats where I can be a witness for others.

Andrew HirschWhat area of ordained ministry is most attractive? Getting to know members of a parish, and being able to tend to them spiritually.

Your Future

Looking ahead to life as a priest in the Diocese of Evansville, God willing, what are your thoughts on the following areas:

The importance of preaching. Preaching is in some cases the only time a priest can talk to the entire parish at once. It is a vital part of ministry.

Ministry in a cluster parish. What have you heard? What do you expect? My pastor is in charge of a cluster. He is happy, but it takes a lot out of him. It is not an ideal situation, but it is necessary in our diocese.

The role of technology, if any, in assisting with your ministry. Today, a person who refuses technology is seen as antiquated. Technology would help me to be available to my parishioners.

The role of the priest in supporting vocations. The best way a priest can support vocations is to live his own life with great joy and purpose; to lead by example.

Qualities of a good priest. What qualities do you think most people want to see in a diocesan priest? One who is: friendly, approachable, hard-working, holy, pious, humble, prayerful.
